Overview:

Tambopata National Reserve is a Peruvian nature reserve located in the southeastern region of Madre de Dios The reserve protects several ecosystems of the tropical rainforest for the preservation of such forest and the sustainable use of forest resources by the peoples around the reserve. The area consists of forested hills and plains, with elevations ranging from 200 to 400 m above sea level. The area presents swamps, oxbow lakes and meandering rivers; the main rivers in the reserve being the Tambopata, Malinowski and Heath rivers. Tambopata National Reserve protects an area of rainforest, which belongs to the moist and wet subtropical forest according to the Holdridge life zone classification.

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 01: Puerto Maldonado - Reserva Amazonica

The Jungle immersion experience begins at Puerto Maldonado airport. Pick up and transfer from the airport to the river port. You begin to experience the enchantment of the rain forest as you take a 45-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River, to arrive at lodge. After a short briefing, settle in to your beautiful cabaña and enjoy your lunch in the dining room. After lunch you will meet with your experienced guide and choose different excursions available at the Lodge, afterwards we recommend a guided walk along the trail system, into the Reserva Amazonica natural area, where you will discover the Amazon Basin. This trail offers an excellent introduction to the forest environment, impressive trees such as the Shihuahuaco, and the strangely beautiful strangler fig, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching and observing exotic insects.

Take the river excursion — a guided afternoon boat ride on the Madre de Dios river to enjoy the transformation from a diurnal to a nocturnal world: animals and birds of the day time give way to species specially adapted to the night. After this activity we return to the lodge for a nice dinner and to relax.

Day 02:Reserva Amazonica - Rolin Island - Lake Sandoval

After a good buffet breakfast, you go to the Lake Sandoval excursion into the Tambopata National Reserve in a wooden canoe, across a beautiful, mirror-like ox bow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles and black caimans. Lunch at the lodge. After lunch, you have a Canopy Walkway excursion. Ascending the first tower, 29 meters above the forest ground, you begin your encounter with the tree top realm. For more than a quarter of a mile, you will literally walk through the rain forest canopy on a suspension bridge network linking eight observation platforms. on the lookout you can observe colorful toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys, and sloths. The excursion finishes by returning to the lodge.

Day 03: Reserva Amazonica - Gamitana Creek

Today, we explore more of the jungle with a hike for one and a half hours to explore the rainforest along the banks of a winding, dark-water creek that is home to many piranha, caiman, turtles and birds, until the Sanipanga landing point. Navigate your way back downstream, appreciating the abundant flora and fauna along the way. Return to the lodge for lunch. After lunch, enjoy the Native Experience excursion, located 25 minutes by boat from the lodge. Visit an indigenous Southeastern Amazon family, where you will learn about their customs, traditional daily living, basic hunting skills, farming and food preparation.

Day 04: Departure Day. Bye bye jungle!

Time to say goodbye to the Jungle after your jungle immersion. A good buffet breakfast before departure. A 45-minute return trip by boat on the Madre de Dios River takes you to Puerto Maldonado, where you may visit Inkaterra Butterfly House. Peru boasts the greatest variety of butterflies in the world, with 3,700 known species. Many of these can be seen at the Butterfly House, as how case for the variety, beauty and adaptability of these fascinating insects

Important Notes!!!

If you have extra-large sized feet we may not be able to find rubber boots in your size for the muddy trails as they are generally not available in Peru….so please bring old shoes for the muddy trails.

We recommend that you bring:

  • A small rucksack
  • Lightweight, tightweave long cotton pants & long -sleaved cotton shirts
  • A fleece and a windbreaker are advisable for cool evenings
  • Light raingear (poncho) for sudden downpours
  • Sneakers or other low heeled walking shoes are essential
  • Sunhat / glasses, sunscreen
  • Insect repellent is a must, preferably with 20% deet
  • A water bottle
